The Importance Of Pet Vaccines
Our Clinton Hill veterinarian team--Brooklyn natives Dr. Pamella Dendtler and Dr. Robert Gooden--want all of their animal patients to live long and healthy lives. That's why they strongly recommend that every pet owner is sure to bring their animals in to see us for pet vaccines.
We serve the communities of Clinton Hill, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Williamsburg, Fort Greene, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, Cobble Hill, Brooklyn Heights, Vinegar Hill, Prospect Heights, Buswick, and Park Slope.
Why Pet Vaccines Matter
First and foremost, pet vaccines are important because they prevent your animal from contracting any number of harmful and potentially deadly pet diseases, including rabies, kennel cough, leukemia, respiratory infections, hepatitis, and so on.
Vaccinating your animal also helps keep the rest of your community safe by reducing or outright eliminating the risk of animal-to-animal (or in some cases, animal-to-human) transmission of pet disease.
Need another reason to believe in the importance of pet vaccines? Vaccinating your animal is good for your wallet, too, since it's much cheaper and easier to prevent pet disease than it is to treat!
Which Pet Vaccines Does My Animal Need?
Our Clinton Hills veterinarian staff is happy to go over all the pet vaccines your animal needs, and when these vaccines should be administered (including subsequent booster shots). We offer the following at our clinic:
- Rabies: this pet vaccine is legally mandated by the state of New York, and should be given to your cat or dog by age 4 months.
- Core vaccines (which are given to all animals despite their lifestyle and relative risk factors, first given around 6-8 weeks old) include feline panleukopenia/distemper, feline herpes virus and calicivirus (for cats) and parvovirus, canine distemper, and canine hepatitis (for dogs)
- Non-core vaccines (only given to certain "at risk" animals) include feline chlamydophila, ringworm, and feline leukemia virus (for cats) and lyme disease, bordetella/kennel cough, bacterial blood infection, or infectious bronchitis (for dogs)
