Heat Stroke in Dogs and Cats

Prevent Your Pet from Overheating

Did you know that your pet is vulnerable to heat stroke, even in weather that may seem comfortable to you? There are signs to watch for, and if you suspect your pet is experiencing heat stroke, contact a veterinarian right away. In Brooklyn, owners rely on compassionate vet professionals at Clinton Hill Animal Clinic in a crisis.

Consider these veterinary pet tips regarding heat stroke:

Signs of Heat Stroke

Do you know the signs of heat stroke in pets? Some include excessive panting and lethargic behavior. Drooling, vomiting, loss of balance, and diarrhea are some other signs of heat stroke. If your pet is in discomfort from overheating, they may exhibit other behaviors that are simply not normal for them. In these situations, contact your vet right away. This could be indicative of heat stroke.

If your pet is unconscious, seek emergency veterinary assistance right away. Time is of the essence.

What to Do

Cooling your pet down should be your first response. However, make sure that you do not cause harm by submerging your pet’s face in water or giving them medication when they are in distress. Get the pet out of the heat, and provide cool compresses or put them in a cool, shallow tub.

If your pet is alert, provide cool water to drink but do not force it on them. Contact the emergency vet right away. Heat stroke can be fatal and causes problems including kidney failure, internal bleeding, and blood clots. In these instances, it is essential to seek veterinary help immediately.
