Tips to Care for Your Senior Pet
Whether you have had a long-time bond with your pet or you have recently adopted a senior pet, it may take some patience to ensure they are happy and healthy. Although it may be sad to watch your animal age, it’s also an opportunity to pamper your pet and show them that they are important to you. Senior pet care is typically different from caring for an active animal. Here are a few tips from us at Clinton Hill Animal Clinic to help you ensure your pet is comfortable and happy throughout their senior years.
Monitor Their Diet
As your pet ages, their dietary needs and eating habits will begin to change. Obesity is common among older pets, but it can also increase their pain and fatigue as well as reduce their desire to participate in activities. So, be sure to get veterinary recommendations about your pet’s weight. If your pet isn’t eating as much as they used to, talk with our veterinarian about supplements that may be helpful for maintaining your pet’s health.
Maintaining Hygiene
Your pet may struggle with their hygiene because of the lack of flexibility and pain. For instance, cats often have difficulty cleaning themselves as much as they used to and dogs may have more matted hair than usual. Be sure to brush your pet daily to help remove loose hair and prevent matting. Brushing will also help to calm and relax your pet.
One of the most important things you can do for your senior pet is to provide them with veterinary care. Taking your pet for regular exams will allow your vet to determine if there are any changes in your pet’s health as well as provide you with tips on how to care for your aging pet. Be sure to take them to the animal hospital if you can’t get them warm, they are more fatigued than usual, and they are refusing to eat or drink water.
