Helping Your Pet Heal: Recovery After Spaying or Neutering
Taking your cat or dog in for spaying or neutering is a big step in responsible pet care—one made with their long-term health in mind. Still, it’s normal to feel a bit anxious about what comes next. At Clinton Hill Animal Clinic in Brooklyn, NY, we often talk with pet owners about what to expect during recovery and how to make the healing process as smooth as possible for your four-legged friend.
The First Days at Home
Right after surgery, your pet will probably be a little groggy. It’s best to set up a quiet, comfortable spot away from household noise and excited kids or other animals. Take time to watch your pet closely on the first night. Make sure it has easy access to water, and offer a small meal if our vet says its ok. Most pets are back on their feet within a day, but some might be more tired than usual for a couple of days.
Protecting the Incision
One of the most important steps is making sure your pet leaves the incision site alone. Licking or biting at stitches can slow healing or even lead to infection. Our veterinarian might send your pet home with a cone collar (that trusty “lamp shade”), or recommend pet-safe alternative covers. Keep the area clean and dry, and check the site once or twice daily for redness, swelling, or any unusual discharge.
Calm, Not Couch Potato
Rest is essential, but total inactivity isn’t helpful either. Take your pup out for controlled walks, avoiding rough play or jumping for at least a week or as our vet suggests. Curbing your cat’s climbing and running can be trickier, but as much as possible, keep things mellow until the green light for normal activity.
