Animals in Cold Weather: Keeping Your Pet Safe
As a resident of Brooklyn, you already know how brutal New York winters can be. While the chilly temperatures are hard on humans, they can be even harder on pets. Our veterinarian at Clinton Hill Animal Clinic in Brooklyn is working to spread the word about keeping your animal safe during the cold months.
Tips for Keeping Your Pet Safe
If at all possible, keep your pet indoors, no matter what the season. Your pet will be safer and happier inside your home. No matter what, bring your pet inside when temperatures are extreme. It's important to know your dog. Some dogs (especially very young, old, thin, or short-coated dogs) get cold faster than others.
While an hour-long walk outside may have been fine a few months ago, it could be too much for your dog during winter. After walks, don't forget to wipe off your dog’s paws when you get back to the house. While walking, a dog's paws can pick up antifreeze, salt, and chemicals used to melt ice. It's important to clean your dog's feet before they try to clean them on their own, potentially ingesting these chemicals and getting sick. Don't forget about other animals, too.
Stray dogs and cats are likely to camp out under warm cars during the cold winter months in an effort to stay warm. Take a look under your car for any visitors before you pull out of the driveway. Don't let your pet become a stray this winter, keep them leashed. Many pets become lost and struggle to find their way home due to the snow hiding their usual scent trail.
