Tips from Our Animal Hospital in Clinton Hill to Protect Your Dog's Paws in the Summer
During the summer months, our animal hospital in Clinton Hill, Clinton Hill Animal Clinic sees far too many dogs with injured, burned, and sore paws. In the summer, asphalt reaches 125 degrees when it is only 77 outside. This temperature is hot enough to damage your dog's paws in only a minute. To ensure you and your furry friends have a wonderful, fun summer season, follow these tips from our veterinarians to protect your dog's paws.
- Avoid the Hottest Part of the Day - Between 10 am and 2 pm, temperatures sore and the overhead sun scorches the pavement. Avoid walking your dog during this time of day, opting for early morning or late evening walks instead.
- Play in the Grass - If you have to be out in the heat of the day, take your dog to a grassy location where the ground will be cooler on his paws.
- Try Waxing - Not your dog's fur, but his paws. Paw wax glides on easily to create a protective layer between your dog's paws and the heat. Wax also guards against chemicals, salt, and sharp ice in the winter.
- Go Shoe Shopping - Protective footwear for dogs is available in all sorts of sizes and iterations including socks, shoes, and heavy-duty boots. Dog suspenders are also available to keep your dog's footwear on securely. Be careful not to leave shoes on too long, though, because dogs needs their paw pads free to perspire and cool down.
