All dogs vomit at some point in their lives. There are many reasons why a dog vomits. Not stomach issues require a trip to the veterinarian’s office. Dr. Dendtler at Clinton Hill Animal Clinic has gathered a few tips regarding dog vomiting and when you need to take your sick furry friend to the animal hospital. If your dog has an upset stomach and you live in or around Brooklyn, contact our veterinarian for advice.
Not to Worry
If your dog vomits once in 24 hours and seems normal, then your dog does not need a veterinarian. The cause of the vomiting is more than likely that your dog overate. Dogs also vomit after eating grass. Although grass might be delicious for a dog, it is not easy on the digestive system.
When to Worry
Dogs that vomit many times in a day or show other symptoms like diarrhea may need to see the veterinarian. Dogs that vomit red blood or old blood, which looks like old coffee grounds, also need to go to the animal hospital.
Signs of Poisoning
One of the most common signs of poisoning in dogs is vomiting. There are usually other signs such as excessive drooling, diarrhea, problems breathing, seizures, and loss of coordination. Do not try to make your dog vomit more. Get your dog to an emergency veterinarian right away.
Bilious Vomiting Syndrome
Usually, right after waking up, your dog may vomit yellow or white bile. This often happens every morning or after sleeping for a long period of time. This is called bilious vomiting syndrome and happens when a dog’s stomach is empty and irritated by stomach acid. Feeding your dog a snack before bedtime usually helps.
Vomiting in Puppies
After a puppy is weaned, it loses the antibody protection given in the mother’s milk. Puppies are most vulnerable to serious illnesses before they are fully vaccinated. Their small size makes it easy to become dangerously dehydrated quickly. Puppies that vomit often or show other worrying symptoms need to see a veterinarian immediately.
